LOOKING FORWARD, LOOKING BACK by dale rogers

[ad_1]LOOKING FORWARD, LOOKING BACK It's that time of year where I start reflecting on what has been and thinking about what is to come. I reflect over the past year, select my favourite photos and consider where I will take my photography in the coming year. Or better yet, where will it take me? This is also the time of year I have my photography existential crisis.

I have selected my top 9 photos for the year. These are not technically the best photos I took, not the ones that got the most likes but are the ones that mean something to me, that I personally like more than the others. Here they are. In these 9 photos you will find - 2 intimate landscapes, 2 environmental portraits, 2 wallabies, 1 Ansel Adams inspired landscape, 1 inspirational image and, of course, 1 dinosaur. These were taken with a Fujifilm XT10, XT100, XT2 and XT3 digital cameras and a Pentax Z1-p film camera using AgfaVista 200 speed film.

Just for kicks I have also attached the instagram top nine images of 2018. These are my images that got the most likes on Instagram. Notice the difference between what I like and what others like on Instagram?

Which leads me to the existential part, the 'What next?'.

This year the 'What next?'. is particularly frustrating. I am increasingly asking myself 'What is the purpose of this image?' or 'What story am I trying to tell?' and even 'What feeling does this image evoke?'. I am becoming less interested in creating a pretty picture. I see so many pretty pictures - technically perfect, ND filtered, multi-stitch panorama, popping Milky Way with torch-lit foregrounds and in epic locations on social media that I have become desensitized to them. I suppose this is a logical progression from my exploration of intimate landscapes over the past couple of years looking for the beautiful in the ordinary as well as a rekindled interest in film photography. This makes a little sense to me but you may be scratching your head with no idea what I am talking about. Photography is a deeply personal endeavour and it's a primary means of expression for me. Clearly, communicating in writing is not. My apologies if this makes no sense.

So, I'm still scratching my head wondering what direction my photography will take in 2019. Cecilia and I have a couple of photography projects on the horizon that we are currently designing but other than that I'm not sure where it will go. I suspect I'll get less 'likes' on Instagram as I look for meaning and artistic merit in photography :-). I hope you stay along for the journey.

May you and your family have a Happy Holiday season.

LOOKING FORWARD, LOOKING BACK - SILM DUSTY "Looking forward, looking back I’ve come a long way down the track Got a long way left to go Making songs, from what I know

Making sense of what I’ve seen All the love we’ve had between You and I, along the track Looking forward, looking back

There are strange days Full of change on the way But we’ll be fine, unlike some I’ll be leaning forward, to see what’s coming

Looking forward, looking back I’ve come a long way down the track Got a long way left to go Making songs, from what I know

If I’m alone at night, I can see Through all the triviality Of the day and I’m okay I just think of those who are dear to me

Looking forward, looking back I’ve come a long way down the track Got a long way left to go Making songs, from what I know Making songs, from what I know Looking forward, looking back..."

[ad_1]Thanks Fujifilm X Series AU !

The Fujifilm X-T3 coupled with the XF100-400mm is perfect for capturing sports due to the cameras fast frame rate and the lenses long focal length.

Dale Rogers from Photo Rangers recently took this shot of a local surfer at Phillip Island using this combination of equipment. The result is a crisp, sharp image. [ad_2]

Film Is Not Dead by dale rogers

[ad_1]Film Is Not Dead Although I love my Fujifilm digital cameras I also love to shoot film. This is one of my favourite spots along the Cape Woolamai Track. A Real Adventure by dale rogers

[ad_1]A Real Adventure This Saturday, I'm taking any who dare out to Cowrie Patch Beach and we'll shoot astro with Sentinel Rock in the foreground. This will be a world's first for astro at that location.

This will be a real adventure because we will be racing the incoming tide and depending on conditions may end up with wet feet, pants and etc. It will require some boulder scrambling at night and in wet conditions so I only recommend this trip to those with a sense of adventure and who are nimble on the rocks. We may even get stuck on that isolated beach (just kidding .... I hope).

Here's a couple of shots of Sentinel Rock, one from above and one from the beach where we will be shooting.

If you are interested, see the complete details under 'events' on the website or facebook.

Wetlands Stroll - Churchill Island by dale rogers

[ad_1]Wetlands Stroll - Churchill Island Cecilia and I had a stroll around the wetlands that face towards Churchill Island. The light was perfect and while we didn't see many species of bird, we did see some of our favourite neighbours - Swamp Wallaby and Cape Barren Geese. These were shot with a FUJIFILM X-T3 and 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6

Finger Filter by dale rogers

[ad_1]
Finger Filter Last Sunday I was taking shots at Cadillac Canyon. I was using a screw on 10 stop ND filter to allow me an exposure of a couple of seconds. The problem I had was the sky was blown out, overexposed, at 2 seconds but the foreground with these beautiful green algae covered rocks was perfectly exposed. I used my finger in front of the lens, covering the sky to reduce the exposure on the sky. I held my hand in front of the lens for about 1.75 seconds then moved it quickly before the exposure finished.

Here's a very poor quality video of the technique. I'll post the final shot in the comments.[fb_vid id="280274265963044"] [ad_2]

Take 3 by dale rogers

[ad_1]Take 3 Fortunately, we live in the midst of a nature reserve but living in such a beautiful environment only highlights the amount of trash and waste we humans produce and the harm it does to other species and the environment. We practice Take 3 for The Sea. Anytime we are out, we make a habit of picking up three pieces of plastic garbage off the beach and placing it in the nearest trash can. We encourage you to Take 3 for the Sea too.

2019.11.30 by dale rogers

[ad_1]2019.11.30 Wrecked This is the remains of the wrecked SS Speke. It lies in its watery grave hidden from view at Kitty Miller Bay. I took this shot as the tide was rising into my shoes, sea fog rolled in overhead and an eerie glow appeared over the headland. I don't take groups here because it's too dangerous but I will take people on a one to one to this wreck. If you want a real and spooky photography adventure, message me about a one to one at the SS Speke! FUJIFILM X-T3, 14mm f/2.8, Mefoto Globetrotter Tripod and Shimoda Designs 40l backpack.
