Dinosaur Dreaming Photography Workshop

Adventure - Discover - Learn

To Book your spot: https://www.trybooking.com/BVAVS

Acknowledgement of Country

Photo Rangers acknowledge the Boon wurrung People as the traditional custodians of the land on which we work. We acknowledge their culture is a living one, which relates to their ongoing connection to all things living and non-living on land, sea and sky. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present.

Workshop Description

We’ll be exploring the one of the richest dinosaur fossil beds in Australia - the Bass Coast Dinosaur Dreaming site. While working on compositional techniques, landscape skill and long exposure participants will discover the therapod (think giant meat eater!) footprint that is hidden on the reef and learn how to spot fossils in the rocks. The reef is littered with petrified wood and unique formations and textures making the perfect backdrop for compositional techniques.

We will also explore the two caves and, conditions allowing, we will venture inside and attempt to get some unique photos out through the mouth.

Eco-Photography

Participants will also learn about the native animals and environment unique to the island to better understand what they are shooting. All workshop facilitators are island locals and professional photographers who have an intimate understanding of the environment, seasonal fluctuations, animals and conditions on the Bass Coast.

Double Event - Long Exposure + Intimate Landscape Workshop

Adventure - Discover - Learn

To Book your spot: https://www.trybooking.com/BVAVL

Acknowledgement of Country

Photo Rangers acknowledge the Boon wurrung People as the traditional custodians of the land on which we work. We acknowledge their culture is a living one, which relates to their ongoing connection to all things living and non-living on land, sea and sky. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present.

Workshop Description

Intimate Landscapes

In our digital age, we are forever chasing the epic landscape. That wide breathtaking view complete with dramatic sky. But epic landscapes are best taken during the golden or blue hour and usually require interesting clouds and skies. When our schedules prevent us from shooting during these times or when Mother Nature provides flat blue or grey skies, we can move to a more Intimate Landscape.

In the 1960’s and 70’s Eliot Porter demonstrated that shooting the Intimate Landscape can highlight the natural environment and wildlife and to increase awareness, understanding and support of conservation efforts. Intimate Landscapes focuses on small, unique parts of that landscape and extracts from the overall scene.

We’ll learn the techniques of shooting Intimate Landscapes from composition to light to focal length to achieve them.

Slow and Long Exposure Workshop

Learn to use long exposure ND filters from Athabasca Australia

This workshop will explore catching wave action around rock pools using variable shutter speeds. From freezing the crashing wave mid-air to creamy 30 sec exposures. We’ll discuss the magic shutter speed to catch a wave mid crash and leave the shutter open long enough to show movement but still maintain the definition of the wave.

We'll be shooting during the gold and blue hours meaning we'll be shooting after sunset to get the best effects.

Eco-Photography

Participants will also learn about the native animals and environment unique to the island to better understand what they are shooting. All workshop facilitators are island locals and professional photographers who have an intimate understanding of the environment, seasonal fluctuations, animals and conditions on the Bass Coast.

GLAMPING SITE
The Sheltered Glamping Co. site is situated off on the left off Berry's Beach Rd just before the Berrys Beach car parking area. If you get to the beach, you've gone too far. We'll have a big red Photo Rangers flag displayed at the camp turnoff. If you are having trouble finding us give me a ring 0466539927.

Please be sure and bring a sleeping bag or blankets to throw over yourself in case it gets cold and bring a pillow. The Sheltered Glamping co is an eco-friendly site using solar power and battery banks. There will be some opportunity for recharging batteries and devices but please bring spares if you have them.

WHAT TO BRING
Camera, fully charged battery (and spares if you have them), SD card(s), ND filters, lenses, tripod, camera bag, flashlight, water bottle, some energy bars or nuts, microfiber cloth, plastic bag and rubber band (camera rain cover), your computer with Lightroom Classic/Photoshop installed, sleeping bag and pillow, an extra pair of shoes and socks and all your extra batteries. Be sure and charge up all your batteries and empty your SD cards before getting to the island.

LIGHTROOM/EDITING WORKSHOP
Editing is where your photo goes from ‘that’s nice’ to ‘WHOA!’ We’ll examine some recent trends and specific editing styles and discuss how they are created in Lightroom or other editing software. We’ll also talk about visual storytelling and how you decide how to edit an image to tell the story you want to tell.

If you are new to editing RAW files, there will be an opportunity to have a BASIC introduction into editing if you prefer to learn that rather than the discussion on unique style and edits.

For this workshop we recommend you bring along a laptop computer with Adobe Lightroom Classic and Photoshop preinstalled. If you do not already have it you can download a trial version here https://www.adobe.com/au/downloads.html. If you do not have Lightroom/Photoshop or a laptop computer you can still benefit from listening and watching how to edit RAW files and the advantage to shooting and editing in RAW.

Recommended Lenses if you have them:
Long exposures/Astro - wide lens with fast aperture (2.0/2.8) if you have one
Landscapes - wide lens
Model shoot - any portrait lens - 50mm, 70-200mm, 85mm and etc.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Ben or I.

FOOD
Dinner - We will be doing a BBQ at The Sheltered Glamping Co, please BYO drinks
Breakfast - San Remo or Cowes will be your best options after the Sunrise workshop

WEATHER
The weather on the island is always unpredictable. If you have them, raincoats, rain pants and waterproof shoes are always a good idea to bring. If it rains there is a good possibility we will go ahead and go out. We find our best photos are ones taken between rain showers on the island. We will only cancel a workshop if there is a danger of lightning or the rain is torrential.

SAFETY
The Phillip Island coast can be a rugged and unforgiving place. Coastal areas are prone to rogue waves and cliff tops are unstable. The island has a very sensitive ecosystem and we will require all participants to remain on the clearly marked paths at all times for their own safety and the safety of our local flora and fauna. Photo Rangers and Benjamin Eriksson Photography are not responsible for any loss or injury that may occur on the workshop.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

Regards,
Cecilia, Dale and Ben

FREE Wildlife Workshop and Bushfire Appeal

Photo Rangers Wildlife Bushfire Appeal

FREE (donation) Wildlife Photography Workshop

Heartbreaking footage of families losing everything as bushfires rage throughout parts of the country and of the significant impact of these fires on pets and wildlife has left many anxious to know how they can help those affected.

The needs of first responders and victims are great and varied and it's the services and charities on the frontline who are best placed to know what is needed and where. That's why monetary donations can often be one of the most useful ways to help.

Next Saturday Photo Rangers is hosting a Wildlife Photography Workshop and we will open this up free to the public. We ask that all participants bring a cash donation that we will pass 100% along to ARC - the Animal Rescue Collective (https://mkc.org.au/donations/trcqld) who are actively working in the field with these fire affected pets and wildlife.

Details of the workshop can be found on our Facebook event Page at https://www.facebook.com/events/2572170906200692/

Or on our website at https://www.photorangers.com.au/events/2020/1/11/free-wildlife-workshop-and-bushfire-appeal

If you have any questions or want to contribute to our collective donation to ARC, please message or ring us.

Please message, call or email if you are planning to attend.

WORKSHOP DETAILS
We’ll be walking the rugged and beautiful Cape Woolamai Track photographing wallabies, native birds and other creatures along the way. We’ll trek up along the high Cape Track that provides one of the best lookout spots for local wildlife as well as some of the most stunning landscapes on the island. In this workshop we'll be teaching fundamental principles of wildlife photography so that you get the best shot possible covering things like camera settings, focus, composition and animal behaviour.

Participants will also learn about the native animals and environment unique to the island to better understand what they are shooting. All workshop facilitators are island locals and professional photographers who have an intimate understanding of the environment, seasonal fluctuations, animals and conditions on the island.

The workshop lasts between 3-4 hours and participants need a moderate level of fitness. We will be doing a 7k hike.

Adventure Based Intimate Landscapes - $80

The workshop is usually facilitated by two professional photographers/educators to ensure each participant gets plenty of one to one instruction and guidance.

The workshop lasts between 3-4 hours and participants need a moderate level of fitness.

Meeting Point and Workshop Location
We will meet at the car park at Kitty Miller Bay

Prerequisites
None, this workshop is for any skill level

What to Bring

Adventure Based Landscape Camera Workshop - $95

Adventure - Discover - Learn

Once you have mastered the basics, it’s time to take your photography to the next level. This workshop focuses on Landscape camera settings, shooting in manual mode, bracketed exposures, composition, shooting with tripods, ND & Polarising filters, remote shutter release and long exposures.

During the summer months approximately 2 million short tailed shearwaters live on Cape Woolamai. Participants will experience these magnificent birds as they return to the island just after sunset en mass. The birds will appear in the sky as a black mass just after sunset and will surround the workshop group. They are harmless but are often oblivious to humans so we will need to watch that we don’t step on them or hinder them in any way. We will maintain a respectful distance from the birds at all times and flash photography will not be allowed.

Participants will also learn about the native animals and environment unique to the island to better understand what they are shooting. Long Exposure, Athabasca Filter Workshop $95

Slow and Long Exposure Workshop.

Participants will also learn about the native animals and environment unique to the island to better understand what they are shooting. The Night Photography workshop is based on the conditions on the evening, if it is cloudy then we will do lots of Light Painting while keeping a keen eye open for stars and the Milky Way.

Long Exposure, Athabasca Filter Workshop $95

Slow and Long Exposure Workshop.

Participants will also learn about the native animals and environment unique to the island to better understand what they are shooting. All workshop facilitators are island locals and professional photographers who have an intimate understanding of the environment, seasonal fluctuations, animals and conditions on the island.

The workshop is usually facilitated by two professional photographers/educators to ensure each participant gets plenty of one to one instruction and guidance.

All workshop facilitators are island locals and professional photographers who have an intimate understanding of the environment, seasonal fluctuations, animals and conditions on the island.
